Familiar Face, New Role

Interim Principal Beverly Sipe stands in front of Lakeside Charter Academy’s mascot Bear.

There’s a familiar face in a new role here at tuition-free, public K-8 Lakeside Charter Academy. Our EC Director, Beverly Sipe has taken on the responsibility of interim principal while we continue to search for Dr. Montague’s replacement.

Ms. Sipe, who arrived at Lakeside in 2020 has been an educator for over 30 years serving as a special education teacher, literacy coach, interventionist, and administrator in K-12 classrooms in North and South Carolina. She graduated from Sacred Heart College with a degree in Special Education and earned a master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Gardner Webb University.

Ms. Sipe will pull double duty and continue in her role overseeing our Exceptional Children program.

When did you know you wanted to be an educator?

I cannot remember a time I did not want to be an educator. Even before I was old enough to go to school, I played school with my younger brother.

Did you have a favorite teacher?

The list of outstanding educators I have had the privilege of having could continue on and on. My 5th grade teacher, Ms. Cohen would not let me be shy or let others answer for me. She repeated over and over, “You are a beautiful and smart young lady. What you have to say is important and matters.”

Ms. Young, my PE teacher and cheer coach in junior high, went out of her way to make everyone feel special and cared for. And my high school math teacher, Mr. Cherry, encouraged me and made me believe that I could go beyond Algebra II/Trig.

What do you love about Lakeside?

I love the culture and community. Lakeside has a family feel. We’re a team and I am privileged to get to work with students, parents, teachers, and staff. Not only do I get to be an advocate for students, but I support the adults as well.

How do you want to contribute to the school culture this coming school year?

It takes everyone -- students, educators, and parents -- to be a successful school. I have an open-door policy and hope that all feel they can talk with me freely. I value input from everyone.

What are you most excited about accomplishing or have already accomplished while at Lakeside?

I think I am most proud of helping to develop our BEAR Core Values and to have helped to create our BEAR time.

I am excited to help Lakeside grow and add a high school in the 2024-25 school year.

Describe a memorable experience you’ve had since you started working at Lakeside?

There have been many memorable experiences here at Lakeside, but one of my all-time favorites happened when a student with disabilities and limited communication came up to me, hugged me, and smiled with no words. It made my day.

When she’s not at school, Ms. Sipe enjoys spending time with her husband, 3 grown kiddos, and their dog. The beach is her favorite place for walking and relaxation.
