Like many educators, Dr. Jim Montague is deeply committed to ensuring future generations have access to a high-quality education. As an educator for more than 12 years, Dr. Montague aims to bring out the best in all students. He has been at the helm of Lakeside Charter Academy (LCA) for four years and knows that strong leadership is the key to improving student learning and overall school experience. In this interview-style blog, we'll share more about Dr. Montague and his journey throughout education!
Which events influence how you choose to run Lakeside?
There were several challenges to overcome when I first came to Lakeside, but I knew I came to improve the school in all aspects. I think it's always best to face a challenge head-on and not try and take the easy route. I learned early in my life to have a solid work ethic and do anything it takes to reach the goal. I believe in my heart that our team has done a great job in achieving that goal and continues working on creating a fun, enriching school.
What do you love most about your role?
I love being around the students and the staff! We have a tight community and family atmosphere at Lakeside. We are all here to better our students and school! I love saying "hi" to the students in the hallway or playing basketball with the students during recess.
What do you love most about your students?
I love that they enjoy coming to LCA! Our staff does a great job building relationships and making learning fun and engaging! Seeing smiling student faces before and after school makes me happy to know students enjoy their education.
When did you know you wanted to be an educator?
I knew that I wanted a profession involving children after coaching basketball and soccer for many years. I went back to school to earn my Masters in Teaching (MAT) in 2009, and the rest is history!
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
I had many favorite teachers growing up. My mom was in education for as long as I remember. Mr. H. was my high school English teacher, and he incorporated music and a lot of fun activities for us! Mrs. O'Reagan was my kindergarten teacher, and I still remember her making Green Eggs and Ham as she read the Dr. Seuss book. It's amazing the things that you remember when you have dynamic teachers! My favorite teachers were the ones that built relationships with me, and I was fortunate to have many that did!
How does Lakeside’s mission and vision align with your personal values?
Scholarship, Citizenship, and Leadership are three great principles to follow. I try to give back to the community as much as possible. I believe that all students should be leaders, and we all need to be lifelong learners!
What are you most excited about for the next group of students to enroll?
I'm excited to meet the new students and their families. It's always fun when new students/families mix with our current families. I enjoy seeing the school grow, and I've worked hard to achieve this!
What else would you like us to know about YOU?
I am a die-hard Panthers fan, and I love to play disc golf in my spare time!
