Middle School @ Lakeside: A Whole New Experience

New paint! New furniture! And even new floors! What isn’t new for our middle schoolers this year? Our focus on character and leadership.

Middle school is a milestone in a child’s life. It comes just as there’s a major growth spurt in their brains, ushering in adolescence. At tuition-free Lakeside Charter Academy (LCA) we recognize that tweens are maturing and ready for more expansive opportunities at school. We’ve refreshed our public middle school as a whole new experience for grades 5-8!

Cultivating Independence and Responsibility

A group of Lakeside Charter Academy middle school boys work collaboratively using Lego.

Adolescence begins around the time a child enters 5th grade and brings many physical, intellectual, and emotional changes. At 11 years old, students seek more independence as they form their identity. Learning, feeling, seeing the world, and relating to others is different from elementary school. We’ve refreshed our classrooms and hallways to welcome this next phase of school.

“Middle school students are a special group of young people,” says middle school science teacher, Gina Tentoni. “I love teaching middle schoolers because they are bright, have lots of goals and dreams for the future, and take some initiative, yet still need and want the guidance of adults who have students’ best interests at heart.”

Building Character and Leading

Our 5th through 8th graders are learning leadership skills, too. They have an opportunity to participate in Beta Club. Lakeside’s Beta Club meets bi-weekly during school to discuss service projects and leadership opportunities around the school and the community. It’s where our middle schoolers create a deeper sense of community and belonging.

At Lakeside Charter Academy our middle schoolers are setting goals and developing character. Our Character Education curriculum aligns with our 3 pillars of education – scholarship, leadership, and citizenship – inspiring the skills essential to becoming confident learners.

“We’re focusing on personal goals and developing the character traits and values we need to achieve them” explains Lakeside’s Character Education teacher, Ms. Conaway. “Activities like this are great because they check off several social-emotional learning competencies.”

Middle schoolers are complex human beings just beginning to figure out who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing. At Lakeside Charter Academy we’re excited for this adventure called adolescence. A few spaces are still available in our middle school. Contact us today and come see all that’s new!
